About Jackson-Washington State Forest:

Jackson-Washington State Forest encompasses nearly 18,000 acres in Jackson and Washington counties in the heart of southern Indiana.
The main forest and office area are located 2.
5 southeast of Brownstown on State Road 250.
This part of the state contains unique topography known as the knobs .
This region provides scenic views second to none and offers some breathtaking hiking opportunities.

The majority of the land that now makes up Jackson-Washington was purchased by the state of Indiana in the 1930 s and 1950 s.
The Heritage Trust program, which uses funds from the sale of the environmental license, Division of Forestry funds generated from portions of timber sales, and assistance from other conservation partners has made possible the acquisition of additional state forest lands.

Salary Information:

This role starts at a base salary of $38,792; however, pay may be commensurate with experience.

About the Job:

In this role as a Forestor, you will complete specialized technical work within the Forest Resource Information Program of the Division of Forestry.
You will serve as the primary data collector for the Forest Inventory and Analysis Program and the State Forest Continuous Forest Inventory Program.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Collect field data on plots that are part of the Forest Inventory and Analysis Program and the State Forest Continuous Forest Inventory Program.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of the State Forest Continuous Forest Inventory Program
  • Prepare and deliver oral and written information and presentations interpreting the results of the inventory data.
  • Assist with ancillary studies associated with the Forest Inventory and Analysis Program.
  • Develop tree management plans including timber harvesting, timber marketing, tree planting, forest inventory, and forest protection.
  • Estimate current and potential woodland growth rates.
  • Establish and maintain public relations with landowners, communities, organizations, wood-using industries and the public by providing forestry expertise.
  • Provide consulting services to federal, regional, county, and community planning efforts.
  • Research new and existing resource information.
  • Administer federal incentive grants for forest and tree management practices.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry or a closely related field.
  • Thorough knowledge in forest inventory methods
  • Specialized knowledge in forest management, forest mensuration, and silviculture
  • Specialized knowledge of botany and tree identification as it pertains to the forest environment
  • Specialized knowledge of computer operations including Microsoft Office and GIS software

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Basic knowledge of land surveying
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to work independently and in solitude as well as with others
  • Ability to plan and conduct work with little supervision
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
